Lake Billy Chinook lies in a canyon at the confluence of the Crooked, Deschutes, and Metolius rivers, and was named for Billy Chinook, a Native American of the Wasco tribe who traveled alongside American explorers John C. Frémont and Kit Carson in their expeditions of 1843 and 1844. The lake is 600-900 feet deep in some places.

... and less visited part of the coast, but it is just as scenic as spots closer to Portland and Eugene to the north. Here we got a bit lost and turned around by a gang of white geese walking the mean streets down by the jetties at the river mouth. We also used a terrible bathroom that was more a bird best than it was a restroom. The walls were splattered with guano. Weary, we stopped at our familiar spot in Sixes for the night. ... beach and back. We finally mustered the courage to get ankle-deep into the water, but ventured no further. This water, which makes its way down from Alaska, is so frigid that I thought for a moment that I had lost circulation in my feet.

The pack up was uneventful except for Michele rescuing a squirrel who had somehow got into the bag containing a loaf of bread. Apparently the poor critter was in quite a panic until Michele rescued it.
