... the Castello Sforzesco, we grabbed a gelato and strolled over in the glorious midday sun. Giacomo explained about how Leonardo had designed the walls of the city with outer brick layers for strength and inner rubble for flexibility. He has explained back at the Duomo that until it was built most of the city was made from brick because there are no rock areas to quary around Milan. The castle was the same with stone reserved for the main fortifications and bricks for ...

Monterosso on Cinque Terre via Milan and Genova

After a less than pleasant night, John had a late breakfast and we checked out. Apart from the food episode it was a great place to stay and we would recommend the Grand Imperiale Hotel as a good place to base yourself to see Lake Como (but don't eat at Cafe Bellini - a couple of doors down!) Anyway about 11am we were picked up by our next driver who took us in a Mercedes minibus to Milan Railway station. Boy was the station busy! We arrived with a good hour to spare and John had ...

Travel Hiccups

A travel blog entry by grantandbonnie

We intended to visit the town of Bolzano this morning. There's not much to do there, but it sounded like an interesting town up in the Dolomites (mountains). It is where the Otzi, the "Iceman" is displayed. Otzi was discovered in 1991 by some hikers on a melting glacier; the mummified body was eventually determined to be over 5300 years old!! We had a lazy morning at the hotel waiting for the right time to catch the train. A couple of the main attractions are closed ...
