Checked out of room 7am, walked to the train station and caught the train to Rome at 7.42am. Lovely smooth ride on the train, hardly any passengers, first stop at Lausanne at 8.30 am. Next stop Montrieux then Sion, still vineyards terraced up the hillsides, snow capped peaks in the background. Next stop Brig, train filling up now along the way. Next ...

Trouble that timetables in Venice are guidance only! After a few nervous moments, we made it with 10 minutes to spare. Fortunately the waterbus made good time up the Grand Canal. The beauty of train travel in Europe when you already ...

... end department store for dinner. The restaurant was situated on the top floor and offered an excellent view of the Duomo. Though there was an outdoor garden, we opted for air conditioning under a glass roof.

Tomorrow we are taking a train to visit Varenna, a small town of 800 at the foot of the Alps very close to the Swiss border. Weather reports call for rain, but whatever. We won't be stopped. ...
