... terrazzo. The Palazzos of the wealthy are astounding constructions, many of them now housing the museums noted above, some converted to public use like the American Embassy in Palazzo Margherita and the French Embassy in Palazzo Farnese. The Barberini Palace is a masterwork of the Renaissance by Bernini and Borromini who were pitted against each other to construct the most elaborate of the papal residences. 400 years later, the ...

06/12 - Now we are off to Rome. Zsofi took us on a bit of a walking tour to see some of the highlights by night. We went to the Pantheon, which was pretty amazing, again all marble in the interior with mosaics covering the walls. It was built in 29BC. People like prior kings and Raphael are entombed there. Yes we are getting through the ninja turtles!! We saw the Di Trevi Fountain that you throw 2 coins into, 1 to make a wish & ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy kristenjohn... a bus and then a train. But we got off at the Vatican, and walked in just as the Pope was beginning his sermon - we have absolutely amazing timing. We didnt even know it was on... it was by total fluke!!!! The crowd that was there was incredible. Thousands of people filled up the round piazza and all faced the Pope, who speaks from his room which is about 5 floors up. He spoke most of it in what i guess was italian, but he also said a few words in other languages, and ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy lovin_apples... Relic upon relic, masterpiece upon masterpiece.. It was truly overwhelming and a complete assault on your visual senses. The tour of the museum felt more like a winding race through a beautifully decorated labyrinth of history and art. There were halls that had huge floor to ceiling tapestries that were so intricate and detailed it looked as if it was three dimensional and it was 500 years old ...
Rome, Italy pugsly2002... s lifetime. After hearing a College choir from Massachusetts sing there for a bit, we headed for the National Rome Museum and got to see some amazing busts and sculptures of Augustus and lots of other important Romans. Our flight leaves tomorrow at noon, so its up at 9 and off to Fiminicino for departure!
Roma, Italy mdoug03... noise were the guards shhing people and yelling 'no photo.' If they just allowed photos and got rid of the guards then the silence thing might actually work out. In between the Sistine Chapel and visiting St. Peter's we stopped for lunch at a streetside cafe outside the walls. And I'll say it now, I don't care, Italian food (and I mean that as in food in Italy) is totally overrated. The food is expensive, the portions are tiny, and what little pricey ...
Rome, Italy danblank... level, containing every book one could possibly imagine! Needless to say we found a few things to tide us over. Greg found Dan Brown's first "Robert Langdon" book (the one he wrote previous to his famed Da Vinci Code.) I purchased a "Tuscan Tavolo" cookbook. Upon arrival home I quickly realized I had more so purchased a pricey souvenir. Traditional Tuscan food often involves parts of the animal, that would quite frankly terrify the ...
Florence, Italy lauren__11... then we walked to the Trevi fountain, then the Spanish steps, then the Pantheon, then the Piazza Novana (I think that's what it's called), then all the way back to the Collosseum to take some more pictures. And in along all those famous places, we shopped a bit, ate a bit, and wandered a bit. I am soooo tired! But it was an amazing day. Tomorrow is the Vatican and more shopping! Yay! Then it's off to Florence! Ciao!!
Rome, Italy marciadanielle... see the Vatican Museum tomorrow, which Susanna already saw before my arrival in town. You know what the most pathetic thing about all this is? Susanna is not all that. She is cool, yes, but her personality is not as fantastic as my story makes her out to be. She's nice, she's friendly, she's good company, but she's kind of quiet (remember Florence?) and deep down she seems a little flat and empty. She reminds me of an ex-girlfriend, Kristin, who I dated while on the rebound from ...
