    ... and was able to reassure my cowering companions to unattach themselves from whatever, and that everything was going to be OK after all. For the rest of the week, we became quite used to these explosions as it seemed as though the locals were warming up for New Years celebrations. The thing is, that not all the 'explosions' were accompanied by fireworks as it seems the Italians are about as making as much noise as possible without not necessarily having the fireworks. ...

    ... own, but with the very low visibility and steep slopes, it was a bit scary. We retreated to a restaurant for coffee in front of a log fire. Because of the rain and wind, we didn't go right up to the summit. Mt Etna is 3,320m high, more than twice the height of Mt Vesuvius. We didn't go past 2,000m, so there was a lot more to see and I was disappointed we couldn't explore more, but the cloud obscured everything. I was still glad we went.

    ... it spits the card out). What to do now? We form the theory that at least the card is safe in the machine, we'll have to come back tomorrow first thing to retrieve it. Worst case scenario, we leave it in Taormina (it's Saturday tomorrow and the bank shuts at 12 while we are on our tour) and continue using only Debbie's card. Could be a lot worse. Begin to relax.

    ... salad. I'm in heaven with my first bite. The flavors blend together beautifully! There is a bit of herbal seasoning in the salad along with a touch of olive oil and vinegar. The plate is garnished with balsamic vinegar.

    Next my gnocchi arrives. Buono! Delicisioso! I eat the gnocchi one by one.

    Now I shouldn't, but what the heck, I'm on vacation and my trip blog is entitled Epicurian Adventures in Sicily. ...

    ... to bus and off to our next port of call "Villa Romana del Casale" to visit the Roman mosaics and the "the bikini girls". We had seen these mosaics in the recent documentary suggested by our friend Giacomo (Italia 500).

    Approaching the site, advised site partly closed so only have to pay discount price of 5 Euro. Was good to see that the closure was due to restoration work being done, with the site soon to be enclosed from mother ...
