... sf in the Vatican. The value of the Sistine Chapel? Money has no meaning. The last pope started a modern art gallery in 1973, in order to display a collection that was largely donated by artists over the past 2 centuries just to claim that they had paintings in the Vatican – Van Gogh, DeChirico, Feininger, Kandinsky, Bottero, Severini – 30 rooms of art, an afterthought in Vatican terms, but a world renowned billion ...

Rome - In Runes

... not to worry they’ll come to you soon as you get near. Experience will tell you it might be better to do a bit of Internet research before hand to insure a knowledgeable tour guide. The Coliseum was impressive not only because of its size and history, but because of it’s way of impressing upon you the shear madness of that era of time, by deaths that would have occurred in both the construction of the walls and ...

When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

My four weeks in Rome have certainly been an introduction to the culture. Living with a family in their day to day life has been a great experience to find out directly from them differences in our cultures, societies, politics and cuisine. What I did as an au pair: My time as an au pair with the Tersigni Family (Elena, Paolo, Martina and Francesca - the two delightful girls) was great! The set up was that my schedule allowed me every weekday ...

... Pope John Paul II's grave, which had a seperate area so you can stop and pay your respects. The area was completly full of nuns, who I think nursed a secret soft spot for the late pope. From Vatican City, we moved towards Piazza Navona. We were racing with the sun, seeing if we could make it to three more sights before it abandoned us for the southern hemisphere. The first of which was Piazza Navona. A very lovely place filled with artists, resturaunts, and tiny church ...

... tour from a guide advertising outside the collesum which cost us 21 euros each and included a tour of the hill and forum too. all are well worth seeing and a tour is essential for the hill as otherwise you will just be staring at ruins which mean nothing to you. After all of the sights we ate at the pizzarito pastarito restaurant before heading to ciampino airport and on to our flight back to Gatwick. we had a great time and loved it so much we are returning again in october!

Where even the new stuff is old.

... so I headed in that direction, past the monument to a unified Italy and the tomb of the unknown soldier as well as an old palace now used as Rome's city hall. I walked past the ruins of the Forum toward the Coliseum, figuring I might as well see the most famous place in town first. I was about to queue for entrance when a very cute Australian woman approached me to ask if I'd like to join a small group (13 people max.) for an English language tour starting in "10 minutes." She ...

What the hell have I done?!?!?!?

... We met other back-packers. I ended up hanging out with Dan from Australia.... a little wine, walking the city at night.... seeing it all light up! Fantastic! The next day the two girls and I went to the Vatican Museum and the Sisteen Chapel. It was amazing. The museums were a little....... crowded. BUt it was worth it. Every painting and statue put a smile on my face. I was literally awe struck at the site of all the ...

Welcome to Italy!

Just when I thought I knew some Italian, I went to Sicily. Spending two days in London with Manuel was the perfect way to start my trip. We discussed personal evolution and the detriments of codependent relationships ad nauseam. I'll spare you that. We went to the gym (my old sanctuary!) and I had my first real workout in 6 months. And, as usually happens after I work out with someone new, Manuel bought a stability ball to use at home. I should earn a commission ...

... but after keeping pace for another thirty minutes, I was hurting. My pragmatic mind was fading and I was too stubborn to slow down and take my time. I was determined to keep pace. I couldn't tell how much further it would be. I was yelling at myself. "Shut up! No, you shut up! I'm not slowing down. **** you! I'm not!" I was snarling, growling, writhing in pain, and forcing myself to endure it all in exchange for keeping pace. Finally, the incline achieved its worst for the last ...

Day in Rome

... cannot eat anything that has eyes looking at me. While we were eating, violin playing men wandered around playing music for us. It was cooler in the hills, and a lovely evening on the terrace, with just a few nice lights. I would love to be there again, now. After dinner, we drove back down to Rome to spend another night being chewed on by mosquitoes. The mosquitoes were a small price to pay for the wonderful time I had in Rome. This will always remain one of my favorite places.
