... simply abandoned – and in fact I passed one ground-level office where everything inside was still lying around – coffee cups on a table, upturned coat-stand, chairs lying on their side. Freaky. I simply wandered before deciding that I had had enough rain for one day, and headed back towards the hostel after 3pm. Had a toasted sandwich and hot chocolate, and sat upstairs in the comfy armchairs and read my book. It was very quiet in the hostel and so relaxing. ...

... Insurance companies were not paying out, and apparently thousands were without electricity or fresh water, and are residing in structurally unsafe houses. There was a shortage of jobs, and people were trying to move out of the city. Much of the land was also unsafe, as it was suffering from some kind of quicksand phenomenon (liquefaction?).
