Nelson, South Island, New Zealand ctompkins11... Our mission now was to find ourselves a tour company to take us up to Cape Reinga, and ‘ninety mile beach’ (which our car rental company wouldn’t allow us to drive on incase we got stuck). We phoned a few but after the second phonecall, it became apparent that tour companies weren’t going out because of a severe weather warning, we were gutted! We did however give our number to a company called ‘Harrisons’ who promised to call us if ...
Marahau, Nelson, New Zealand katandstevie... trip, and drove joyfully towards Nelson, through the wine trail in the Malborough region. We stopped at a couple of great wineries (bought some souvenirs, too, obviously) and arrived in Nelson at night. We found a cool backpacker place. They had an adjacent place and it was empty, so we had had a whole appartment to ourselves...Great!!

... to walk the rumoured 20 minute walk. Although we're quite sure that we could have done it in 30 minutes if we weren't exhausted and sore from the previous 4 hours of walking (through jungle, over hills and on non-asphalted walkways!). After getting our feet wet once more getting back into the water taxi, we arrived exhausted and sore at our bed and collapsed for the evening... We might have gone out for food, but we can't remember through the haze ...
Marahau, South Island, New Zealand wolftrails... a ferry booked to the north island early the next day so that left just us with Ann and Dan. John our guide and Dale and John who managed the lodge. Another great dinner, good conversation and huge satisfaction at the end of the day. The last day was more walking but with boat rides between bays for lunch and back to the start point. We also walked around what was a Maori village but was difficult to see because time (and wild pigs) had eroded the land. I could go ...
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand shimmy08The drive from Franz Joseph to the Abel Tasman National Park was not necessarily long in km/miles but took us quite some time to get there because the road was narrow and had numerous twists and turns plus quite a few one-way bridges. We stopped at pretty much all the objectives that had any touristic potential but the most memorable stop was at the Pancake Rocks. The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are famous for the limestone formations ...
Motueka, South Island, New Zealand gapostolA week or two ago we decided to go on a wine tour. It picked us up right outside our door and brought us to 4 different wineries, some of them even had fruit and cheese platters for us. Lots of different wines to try as well. Pretty good deal for the money. The Nelson province is pretty well-known for it's wine. Most of the wineries were outside of Richmond which is about 20 minutes outside of Nelson. Besides the wine tour, I've been pretty busy covering ...
Richmond, South Island, New Zealand ben2africa... and never cracked a smile or spoke), the exotic french family with designer gear and sparkly clean shoes, obviously we didn't trust any of them. Ok you could see a bit of the bay. As our pick up approached we were on the beach and waiting. Ellie took the opportunity to photograph a dead monkfish which had washed up on the beach. When the boat finally arrived, the tide was ...
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand richardhmcotton... of the boat. One impromptu back seat of the car change of wet clothing later, we resume our journey towards Haast, through the Mount Aspiring National Park. We stopped many times to marvel at our surroundings, including some spectacular water-falls. We also made two 'Good Samaritain' stops, once to relay a phone message to the AA for an unfortunate English couple whose camper van had broken down at the Gates of Haast (there's no mobile phone ...
