My last day in Sicily is a good one! We arrive at Zia Ester's house in Siracusa and only stay long enough to drop off Marta so she can help cook. Nuccio and I walk the perimeter of Isla di Ortegia, which is a beautiful part of downtown Siracusa, another UNESCO site. It is surrounded by the Ionian Sea's clear, turquoise waters. ... pear trees. I'm able to enjoy all of the bounty from his garden including homemade wine with every meal and heaps of the best olive oil I've ever tasted. Not surprisingly, Marta is an excellent cook, preparing every meal with simple, healthy and local ingredients.I may even be able to replicate the nightly minestra- usually made with beans which are pureed and then served with tiny pasta, topped with copious amounts of olive oil. He has such a stupid look on his face we think he must be a tourist who accidentally is on the wrong side of the road.
