    ... creamy limestone found in the area. Here they call it Oamaru stone.

  • Some of the buildings date back to the 1860s. Features included in this are the Opera House ( culture Tony ) St Patrick's Basilica and the Courthouse. Oamaru used to be a rich and ambitious town and in it's heyday and used to be about the same size as Los Angeles.

    27/1/15 We got the intercity bus to Dunedin to stay with Tracey and Steve. They were so generous and welcoming, and gave us a much needed rest from the bus!! After an afternoon nap in a comfy double bed, we had roast lamb for dinner, which was delicious and an absolute treat!     ... of feet up but we could almost reach out to touch them. we didn't of course. When it was clear that they had all passed us by we decided to head back up the cliff to the car. again H&S nowhere in sight. Pitch black, steep steps and only the light of an iphone to guide us.
