<br>Day one begins in typical Guigon fashion with fog. Lots and lots of fog. For Yellowknife at the end of October this is incredibly unusual. So is the temperature in general: +3! By Noon the fog had not lifted and we began to worry that our flight would not leave. Actually, we were worried our flight would not get here to pick us up. Something about planes not being able to land when they can't see the ground or something. We figured we&#8217;d go the airport as planned ...

Re-freeze and final thoughts

... shuttle which was GREAT. Even had a continental breakfast, so we felt like gold this morning. Kicker? It's snowing and snowing hard! - Airplane boards on time, we lolly-gag on and settle in for our 3 hour flight. Remember yesterday... happy about 3 hours not 4? Well, we had to wait in line (the airplane) in order to get de-iced, which was literally over an hour on the runway! Yes... 1 hour sittin' on the plane and we are still in Denver! Uncool. - We're off... fly ...

The Spectacular Nahanni National Park

... the plane up onto the beach before setting off to explore the area. A Log Cabin had been constructed many years before by Gus and Mary Kraus. Gus a gold prospector and Mary a native had lived inside the Nahanni national park and were relocated when the park was give UNESCO World Heritage status in 1971. The cabin now owned by Simpson Air is run as a remote fishing and hunting retreat. The views from the ...

Pre-Packing and Sorting out the house

The trip is coming up fast and Kiyo and I are busying getting the house ready and doing some pre-packing planning. This is my third trip to Europe and Kiyo's first. The last two times I found I had way too much baggage, as in luggage. I didn't end up using half of all what I packed and lugged around through downtown London, and across airports. So this time we're going ...

Beach day!

Today was beach day. We went swimming for a bit in the gross muddy, sandy moss. There was barely any shade anywhere, so we sat under a small gazebo, watching people play in a volleyball tournament. I chatted with a reporter who was there to cover it while Keith just generally chatted and made a scene. After a restful refreshing day in the sunlight, we went back to camp, cooked some noodles and lounged around the ...

Final entry on Yellowknife AWG 2008

... the announcing team to keep everything straight IE, who was on what lap and who was ahead and even whether it was a guy or a girl coming into the stadium as the exchange zone was 100+m from us. We had to rely on radio relays, to let us know who was entering the exchange zone. This was the final day and it was really great to see the reaction of these racers as they finished their race ...

Dempster Highway - The Drive to Eagle Plains

... place on earth that I would rather have been at that particular period in time. About 60 km before Eagle Plains, the snow and icy gave way to relatively flat terrain covered by stunted pine trees. I now felt that I had come through the mountains and was on cruise control, albeit at a slow speed, headed towards Eagle Plains Lodge. With a spectacular moon sneaking over the Ogilvie Mountains, I arrived at Eagle Plains Lodge around 20:00. There isn't much there at ...

Fort Simpson to Yellowknife - Day 4

... to satisfy my curiosity about the Deh Cho. It was with regret that I moved on. In realty, the weekend would have transpired in the Slavey language and I am not sure how welcome non First Nations people would have been. Breakfast on this day was not to be Menu Item No. 1 at McDonald's (there is none in Fort Simpson) but instead "the breakfast special" at the Nahanni Inn. Overheard conversation at the next table centered on the next door ...
