... including a kind of focaccia, apparently typical of the Camargue. For ready-to-eat or take-away food there were huge dishes of paella as we have seen all over Arles. As you would expect, there were huge stalls of cheese, some selling only goats cheese and others only sheep's cheese. Stalls of tapenade of all kinds, and lots of honey stalls. Tomatoes of the 'ancien' kind as well large and small cherry tomatoes ...

The main attraction that had sparked our interest in this area is the Palace of the Popes. Wikipedia explains nicely, "The Avignon Papacy was the period from 1309 to 1377, during which seven successive popes resided in Avignon, France rather than in Rome. This ...

Avignon is a French commune in southeastern France, bordered by the left bank of the Rhône river.  It is about 580 kms south east of Paris.  Of the 90,000 inhabitants of the city about 12,000 live in the ancient town centre surrounded by its medieval ramparts.  The walls that were built by the popes in the years immediately following the acquisition of as papal territory are well preserved.  Their palace, the "Palais des Papes", is a large Gothic building ...
