The Sun Came Out in Belgium

... window on the way, listening to my ipod looking out the window. By the time I got out of the train at Brugges, and walked along countless other tourists (insane, and this is WINTER), the sun had peeked out a bit.

By the time I was walking into the main historical center, I had beautiful weather. Nice rays of sunshine giving me some beautiful lighting for pictures and just admiring the beauty of ...

A visit with an old friend

... and pasta dish with tomato sauce, mushrooms, celery, onion, garlic, etc. Fantastic and delicious. Afterwards, we met up with a few (mainly local) CSers at a bar near her house, where we played some board games and "werewolf" which wasn't too bad. Most of them were quite friendly and I had a nice time.

We came home not too late, as I was to go to Brugges the next day.

Crumball Rally Day 4 - Macon to Brugge

Today was a many miles day - around 500 in fact, or about 800km! We all met up in a carpark on the outskirts of Macon, then travelled in convoy north. As we were travelling such a long way today, we all decided to use the motorways, as despite being toll roads and meaning we'd see a bit less scenery, it was well worth it as we'd get to stop for longer on the way and get there earlier. The tolls were quite expensive compared to what I'm used to (it cost us about 21 Euros/NZ$42 for the ...

Chocolate, Beer and Fries, oh my!

Brugge may be a fairy tale city, but the thing they don't tell you is that the whole place smells like french fries! The Flemish like to fry everything from meat to fries to waffles...twice. When we arrived in town, we had JUST missed the beer festival (of course) that had taken place all weekend long. So we did the next best thing, and went to a pub that serves the most Belgian beer. 't Brugge was ...

In Bruges...

... the market and the shops and then went on a boat ride which was fantastic, after which we went to a tea-room which claimed to have the best hot chocolate in town, and it was really good! It was incredibly sickly though and gave both Erin and I a headache for the ride home!

Altogether a really fun day out in Bruges, truffles bought, Belgian food eaten and Belgian alcohol drunk, and Belgian chocolate drunk! This is another place where we will definitely be returning!!

Oldschool beauty

We made our way from Gouda to Brugge. Brugge is a beautiful town that holds a lot of its older architecture and feel. With its canals and its medieval buildings it is a great town to spend the day exploring and taking pictures. Once again a drizzly day we lucked out and managed to get a few hours of sunshine to take out our cameras.

Our campsite was about 15 minutes out of town so we took a bus that took us directly to the city ...

Return to Ghent

... castle and definitely worthwhile to see.  Another first visit was the Design.Museum.  This is a lovely small museum which was having an exhibit on "Domestic Aesthetic" where the design aesthetic in common household things was appreciated. In the exhibit we saw many things from our parents and grandparent's houses - like early Tupperware, metal juicers, hairdryers and early Hoovers.  The permanent ...

Exploring Centre Ville

... French, but that is a traditional Belgian dish rather than a French dish, but I wasn't in the mood. Since I couldn't find another more interesting place to eat at for regular food, I decided that I would go back, and look for some more street food. On my way out of Grande Place, I ran into this beautiful gold and black I think it was Marble or bronze plaque, dating from the turn of the 20th century it looked like, and right next to it was a gold or bronze ...

Beers and Chocolates

... quick few beers and then we made our way up to the Menin Gate to watch the Last Post. When we were here in August with Paul and Julie, it was hot, but this time, it was so cold, down to 3 !!! As soon as it was over, we found a café and ordered Flemish Stew. It was so thick and good and fattening. It went down a treat. And as this is the land of chocolate, I had the best chocolate mousse I have ever tasted. We washed it down with a hot chocolate and ...
