... t go across. In Birsay was a ruined Earl's Palace which we had a quick look at then headed off for our tour of the amcient tomb - Maeshowe. We cut down through the middle of the northern part of the island, past Twatt (!), through Dounby and around Loch Harray to the site of Maeshowe near the standing stones we visited yesterday.

The tomb was inside a huge earthen mound and is about 1000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Cheops. The entrance was lined with huge stone ...

... The fact that they had to use found materials to create this beautiful edifice is a testament to their artistry.

When I left the chapel, the rain was subsiding, so i got some pictures of the statue as well, which was also created with found materials. Right after I got my pictures I went to the fence to pet a cow. Right beside her another cow defecated all over her lounging friend. Good thing that rain started up again.

Magnificent approach to John O'Groats from Duncansby Head. Despite the early morning rain, a great change in the weather from yesterday, which can always be expected this far north in Scotland, the whole team - Lauren, Callum, Sally, Allan, Dick, John, Chris, Ross and Jess - turned out to walk the last few kilometres of our epic journey.
