Merida was built on the foundations of the Mayan city of Tihoo after it was conquered in 1542. As often happened in the Mayan regions the Spaniards built their churches or towns on top of the remains of the Mayan pyramids. Today, Merida is a fantastic example of a colonial town and probably one of the most architecturally beautiful in the region. Cultural Merida

The local anthropology museum was very interesting, even though it was all in spanish
Visited the ruins at Uxmal, amazing place, compact in size, amazing carvings, still clear.
Walked about the nuns quadrangle, the governors palace, casa de las tortugas ...
The ultimate scam
... one able to repel insects (both of the facts were obviously a big load of... well..). Finally, we saw our dear student friend coming out of the store, getting money for some customers who just bought their souvenirs in El Mundo Maya. A nice scam that was ;) Luckily we did not fall for that and found a nice hammock a few streets away (paying 20% of the price we were told above).
So a word of advice - go check out El Mundo Maya, cause stuff is nice there, but do not ...
Merida and the chicken
... and grab the camera - his reaction was a little surprising and he spent some time apoligising. Trying to find a resturant, we accidently stumbled into a high-end resturant and after seeing the prices, we had a quick drink and promptly stumbled back out.
