... Talking is cathartic.
This entry is not meant to sound dramatic. Its meant to warn and advise. Our hotel owner is going to call the Masaya Volcano National Park and warn them that hijackers operate just outside the entrance. I also plan on putting this entry on the Lonely Planet Thorntree so as to provide additional warning.
I know that we were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had we not accepted the offer of a cab the guy ...
... small ones and a few personal items weighing about 25 lbs total back to Oregon (YES, I'm serious!), we headed to the Managua post office to see what the story was. We arrived at the bright pink post office at 9:30am and got an estimate of $120 for shipping. Compared to the other quotes this was a bargain!
Since the post office doesn't sell boxes we hauled our stuff back to the car and drove to UPS to buy boxes and shipping supplies ...
... purchased down here in Managua. They bought this property and are beginning to build a house on it for future study abroad programs to Nicaragua. The land and house is beautiful! We got to look around the place and then played charades for a little while we waited on dinner. Dr. Giles had picked up food from a local restaurant... it was real Nicaraguan food and very delicious! There was so many different foods to try (and they were all prepared the Nicaraguan way) - beef, chicken ...
Managua, Managua, Nicaragua cainja6We made it safely!!! My flight was on time and smooth... so all that was great. We landed in Managua about 8:30 Nica time (so 10:30 at home). It took a while to go through customs and get our bags, but it wasn't too painful. I met some nice Nicaragua people on the plan who talked to me like I spoke Spanish - so I just smiled and said si! Also, once we got off the plane all of the airport people were masked! Apparently, they are scared of Americans bringing in swine flu?! kinda funny ...
Managua, Nicaragua cainja6... didn't. AnnaThea your crazy if you read this. Spent 3 nights in Granada. Went to a town called masaya to see some Volcanos which are still active. Theres really about 6 or 7 volcanos in this one area. The teraine is always changing. We thought it'd be a good idea to go down into a Lava tube. so we paid for a giude. 2 bucks each and we went hiking into a lava tube for 2 hours down 60meters and in 300 meters. Ton of bat and lots of wierd sounding insects. That was definitely a first ...
Granada, Nicaragua carrera2u... So word by word we explained we need a room... Should have learnt more spanish... ;( Got a separate room because we could not explain that we wanted dorms. It was kind of late though, so maybe its a good thing - we didnt bother people. Got the room, took a cold shower (no warm showers in Nicaragua), and off to bed we go...
Granada, Nicaragua pitabread... directions??!!! Last night we went for a wander and a nose in the cathedral, which was another beautiful piece of architecture. Then we had a really nice meal at an outside table in a lovely restaurant, where we could watch the carnival that was going on through the street. It was fantastic. There were loads of people riding beautiful horses, dressed in cowboy and cowgirl gear and really showing off their skills on ...
Granada, Nicaragua edandali... picked a new taxi driver (our scheduled one was late) who wasn't quite a slow speaker, and I asked if he knew where Casa Naranja is. "Si, si, senor. Son dos, pero conozco lo donde esta." Or something like that. As long as he took us to the right one. Well, we're cruising along, and Carrie and I both notice we pass the turn that we took last week when we stayed here. I ...
Managua, Nicaragua woody0198... guy make a pot and he went through how they were made and glazed etc. They were really pretty, and so, somewhat stupidly I bought one, but it was quite cheep so weŽll see how it lasts!
