This turned out to be a very large beaver, which swam on the surface right across the pond to a channel on the other side, then disappeared into long grass. He emerged later, but was too obscured by the long grass for photos then, though we got some good ones when he was swimming.
We carried on along the path, but talked to a couple on bikes coming the other way, and they advised that ...

Our biggest fears about cruising is that we won't have enough time to properly see things in port. What we've come to realize is that the places they pull into, don't need much time. ... highly recommended (via Yelp) for dinner, and since we couldn't get into a couple of other places--note to self: always make reservations if you are in Anchorage--we settled for a place that doesn't take reservations. Food was excellent. We ate little dinky crabcakes for an appetizer, and then Tim had a salmon burger and I had salmon grilled on a plank. Excellent.
Tomorrow, we head to Denali National Park.
