Bye Cozumel! Off to Palenque!
... very basic Spanish I managed to order and tell them that my bus was leaving and could they bring the food out quick. I was pretty impressed with myself to be honest! I thought I was going to be the only White person on the bus but thankfully two other tourists got on! Praying I'm not going to be sat next to some creepy guy but knowing my luck I will. So far I have it to myself, ...
Day 3, Saturday January 14, Cozumel, Casual/Tropic
My morning walk on deck 5 was pretty successful, despite the dampening
of a morning drizzle. Since I was booked on a walking tour, I cut back
my walk on deck to 3 miles (8 laps), and finished about 6:30. Internet
on the Jewel is a bit frustrating as there is no wifi in our cabins, and
it has not been very reliable in the public rooms. I tried to go online
in the WJ at breakfast, and could not connect ...
Our First Dive
... a massive losbster hiding in a cave. The dive went really well except Jane had a sore ear for the next few days becauase of it. There were two fails however besides the ear; the first being that we tried to use the underwater camera for the first time but it kept fogging up because the camera was wet, and the second was that we couldn´t use our own regs because we were missing a fourth hose to connect to the BCD, massive fail. On our way home however we bought ...
Turtle-tastic in Tankah
... see why - over the course of the dive we had encounters with at least 5 Green Turtles! We saw a young one which was really beautiful, maybe only 4 or 5 years old....and lots of the larger ones had fish on their shells who were hitching a ride. It was really nice to be underwater again, and seeing these wonderful animals in the sea again.
In the evening we walked to our local restaurant the Blue Sky Pizza and shared a couple of ...
Welcoming the unknown.
The insanity of getting ready, and getting here is finally over, but truly the adventure has just begun. We arrived in San Francisco to a dirty "smoking room" hotel closet. The cigarette smoke coated the dusty wood, and just about as quickly as Alayha could call the front desk for a new room, Rozzi had already pulled out the incense. Thank god for the incense and a working window (suprisngly) because all rooms were apparently booked. Despite our surroundings we had a delicious ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Amaranto Bed and Breakfast Cozumel
Enjoyed the Palapas Amaranto
We stayed here in January for one night. It is a great place to stay. We walked to the town center and dined at La Choza. The neighborhood is alittle noisy with music and a rooster that wakes you alittle too early. We didn't have the opportunity to speak with Eliane or Jorge too much. Since they llive at Tamarindo. We were happy with our decision to stay here rather than a hotel.
Lots of flavor!
My husband and I have returned to Cozumel every year for its excellent diving and easy-going atmosphere.
4 years ago we discovered the "Palapas Amaranto" and fell in love with the place. Ever since we have always returned. This little charming place is in the heart of Cozumel, just a short walking distance from the town square, local restaurants and shops. For those who want a closer experience with the locals and their culture this is the place to stay!
The architectural design of the property evokes the Mayan tradition and invites for a relaxing stay. There are 3 Bungalows and a tower that consists of and AC suite and the penthouse suite. Our favorite room is the penthouse for its beautiful design with an incredible Palapa roof and a magical look out that gives 360 degree views of the island.
All rooms have all the amenities needed such as microwave, refrigerator, T.V etc. and are decorated beautifully. There is a common area downstairs with computer, sitting area, and a little pool perfect for relaxing after diving. There's also a place for you to rinse your dive gear.
Tamarindo, Amaranto's sister property has the same feel and amenities but also serves delicious breakfast prepared by Eliane.
Of course, the primary reasons for us to return are our wonderful hosts Jorge and Eliane who always welcome us as friends and are willing to help us anytime.
Last year my husband and I decided to celebrate our wedding in Cozumel. We wanted something different and relaxing and couldn't' think of a better place. Eliane assisted us with all the preparations and was our eyes and guidance in Cozumel.
We celebrated our wedding in a beautiful Villa by the ocean that Eliane helped us select. She prepared a delicious cocktail hour for our guests and helped us with all the arrangements such as entertainment, dinner, bartender, legalities etc. When we arrived to Cozumel all we had to do was choose from the options she had selected for us. We couldn't have done it without Eliane's help!
Amaranto is a wonderful experience for those who are in search of something different and with a lot of flavor!!
Great experience
We spent 5 fantastique days in Coxumel , in november. We stayed at Amaranto, in a charming very confortable appartement. It is well situated in the town center, and above all, the owners are very friendly and happy to help you with some good address, as retaurants, beaches...
We were there with 2 small children, and they have been welcomed in all places we went to, what we appreciate.
Wonderful Time Nov 10-16,2004
My husband and I stayed here and had a great time. Jorge and Eliane are wonderful hosts; always very helpful with recommendations. Our room was always clean and it was very quiet at night. Biscotti (the cat) was always there to greet us, we even let her in our room a few times, she's also very friendly. The open shower was really cool and it rained heavily one night so it was neat to see and hear the rain in the bathroom.
We ate breakfast at Coffelia and the crepes are awesome. Especias for dinner is great and the owners are extremely friendly. La Lobsteria on 7th ave was good. We ate at many of the small places around Amaranto and never had a bad meal. We walked everywhere at all times of day and night and always felt safe.
Highly Recommend!!
What a find! Heaven in Cozumel
On a recent trip to Cozumel, my travel partner and I missed our Saturday flight (oops!) and needed a place to stay in town for one night. She knew the owners from a previous trip, so we looked them up and were able to secure the "penthouse" at Amaranto for the evening. I felt like I had stepped into a tropical dream! The room is spacious, very clean, and included a "crow's nest" observation platform that afforded us views in all four directions, including the ocean which was only a few blocks away. A full bath, TV (never on), microwave and fridge are included. Open a few windows and the breezes off the ocean kept the place very comfortable. The only problem (if it is one) is that as soon as we got in the room we fell asleep for 12 hours! How's that for relaxing?
I fell in love with this place, and I am already looking to return to Cozumel in November. I will be staying at Amaranto, or the sister property Tamarindo, for all of my future trips. The price seems incredibly inexpensive for what you are getting...highly recommended!
Amaranto is unique
Amaranto is for us the best place to spend our vacations in Cozumel, and, after staying there 2 years ago, we couldn't think of another place to return this year, because :
- it is a real pleasure for the eyes because everything in this place is beautiful
- there are 3 large bungalows in mayan style and 2 beautiful suites for 4 persons, all of them perfectly clean and very well equiped with refrigerator, micro-wave oven, coffee machine, TV and AC
- there is a little swimming pool, great to relax before or after diving or snorkeling
- we always meet nice people, who prefer being close to the locals, try the little shops and local restaurants, and avoid big shopping centers and resorts
- Jorge and Eliane are the bests hosts we know, always willing to help you and to give you the best advice to have a wonderful time in Cozumel !
A Beautiful Secret Hideaway!
After reading many reviews, my husband and I decided to give Amaranto a try. I am so glad we did! We stayed in the top room of the tower for three days and I can't wait to go back again. I originally wanted to stay at Tamarindo, but now I'm glad they were full. As soon as we arrived in our room, I had to climb up the ladder to the look-out tower platform (one of the benefits of being in the top room of the tower), and I felt like a little kid again! We did end up using the mosquito net over the bed after the first night, but I found it to be romantic and fun. (We were there in mid-April) The room was spacious, even with all of our dive gear, but instead of the two big pullouts under the bed, I would have liked to have a dresser with drawers for my clothes(small little nit pick). The tower is not air conditioned, but it was fine. In fact I loved opening up all the shutters to let in the full breeze. Plus it's fun to look out and see what's happening in the neighborhood. One might find the open nature of the room to be a bit noisy, but I like hearing the birds, animals and people noises as the world wakes up. Jorge told me there were earplugs available downstairs in the common area, but we never needed them. The little soaking pool and palapa area with stools was just perfect for a quick relaxing dip after a day of diving. A few afternoons we came home to jazz playing from the common room's tape player and it was like heaven. Jorge told us where to get beer from the local guy in the neighborhood. It was within the same block, nice and cold. Very cheap if you take back your empties. And on the way home you can stop in a small little shop for snack items. The rinse tank was great for hosing down our dive gear. (I really missed that at the other hotel.)There's even a place to hang your wet suits to dry. But the best part was the architecture and interior decor. I loved the white walls with purple accents and the mexican star lights that hung in the common area. The whole place really fed my soul! I almost hesitated to write a review because I'm afraid the secret will get out and it will be full the next time we go! You can't beat it for the price. Sure, the other hotel we stayed at had a great beach and all, but it was also three times the cost! Unless you HAVE to have a beach outside your door, stay here and you won't be sorry.
Peacful Tranquility
I stayed at the Amaranto for seven nights. It was a very peaceful stay. There are only 3 bungalows so there is not a lot of traffic in and out. The young lady who cleans the rooms in very pleasant and did a wonderful job. This is very private and I would recommend it to everyone.
Amaranto, a lovely place to stay!
I have been coming to Cozumel since 2000, and have stayed at Amaranto each time. I feel fortunate to have found this location, because it is the best location on the island! I have stayed in different palapas at Amaranto, and have enjoyed each one equally. The palapas are completely accomodating, having a huge comfy bed, warm shower, a fridge for left-overs, a vanity where I can get ready for the evening, a refereshing fan (or air conditioning for those who need it, not me!), and plenty of space! The palapas are always clean, which is nice since I bring home tons of sand each time I dive or hang out at the beach.
The deco at Amaranto incorporates the aesthetics of Mexico, including hand made tile, the palapa style architecture, and many Mexican home deco items and nick-nacks. I have relaxed many days after diving, laying on the bed, feeling the breeze from the fan, and admiring the unique decoration, especially the hand carved light cover that hangs over the door! What a feeling of serenity!
I am pretty well planned when I travel to Cozumel, but when I first came, I wasn't so familiar. Eliane and Jorge gave me all of the information that I needed and more to make my trip wonderful. They let me know where everything was, supermarket, great taquerias, where to rent a car for less $$, and some of the highlights of the island. There was no pressure to purchase any side trip packages like I have had at resorts, just some helpful information to make my trip easier. Eliane and Jorge were available to answer any questions I had, and were more than accommodating! I instantly had felt like they had been life-long friends!
I adore Cozumel and Palapas Amaranto!
Loved my stay at amaranto
i just returned from amaranto to the states and wanted to share my
comments about amaranto it is the 4th time that i have been staying
with Eliane and Jorge owners of Amaranto and Tamarindo. i love to stay
their for several reasons the mexican architecture and decor is a
beautiful canvas for the palapas the property is conviniently located
next to the ferry.and the center of cozumel.good for divers;i find the
propertyvery well kept.with clean rooms equiped with purified
water, refrigerator,as well as air condition.and coffe maker, and cable
tv .all of that for less than 40.dollars a night as a single woman i
felt very secure their. and i forgot to mention the quality of the
matresses ,witch are excellent this is rare in mexico ,even in the more
expensives places i did not find matresses as good.
those are the reasons i alway go back to amaranto and tamarindo to visit my friends and do some diving.
hope you will be as privilege as me and visit those 2 places in Mexico
believe me you will be happy you did. have a great trip. Annais
