It was so nice to have George meet us at the airport late at night - he is the perfect host and nothing is too much trouble. He took us back the following day to pick up our hire car. The room was spacious and very comfortable. He was willing to cook anything we wanted for breakfast, but we got hooked on his fruit platter and home cooked muffins.

With only one day in the San Jose region, we decided to stay in the Alajuela region to get a feel for a real Costa Rican community. Staying with George, at Alegria, was a perfect sop. His home is lovely, perched in a quiet commuity that is a 10 minute walk away from the downtown region. George arranged for us to be picked up at the airport by Luis, who spent the afternoon driving us around to a coffee plantation, a local soda shop for lunch, a local market and gave us history of communities such as Santa Barbara, Heredia and Alajuela. George also made restaurant recommendations, and prepared us a fabulous breakfast.

While talking to George at breakfast, he said that most of the crime here is opportunistic, but then, almost as an afterthought, proceeded to show us a telescopic stick he has, with which he fought off 3 men who were trying to hijack his car. He kicked his car door open and floored the first one and beat the other two off with his stick, and then …

It's our first day in Costa Rica. We arrived about noon,  and got picked up by a local driver. With only one day in the San Jose region, we decided to stay in the Alajuela to get a feel for a real Costa Rican community.  It's also a city only five minutes away from the airport, both the international one and Sansa airlines, which we are taking …

... The area was super crowded so that if you stopped walking you might get run over. We finally found a seat to wait by our gate where I proceeded to people watch. Which, by the way, is a gazillion times better than just regular people watching anywhere else. There was a guy walking around with his laptop open in hand, ear buds in his ears, rolling luggage in the other hand skyping with someone. I'm fairly certain there's an app for that. ...

... fit. Each box weighed almost 30 kg (66 pounds) by the time we were finished.

San José is a city covered with grafitti. While we would prefer to see a lot fewer prison compound style walls, we think the art form looks good on the walls. Here is a sampling of my favorites.

Is it ’cos I’m ...
