Flying to the end of the world!

... of snow covered mountains.

Although we were prepared for cold weather we were still both a bit shocked at how cold it actually was when we stepped outside the front doors of the tiny wooden (looked like a log cabin!) airport. The main issue was the wind which was v. cold! After checking into our hostel we wandered into Ushuaia itself to check out the tourist info office and get some food supplies. It was obviously completely different to BA and ...

In Ushuaia...Finally!

... mate. It is by far the most popular drink in South America. It is short for Yerba mate. It is like a ritual, or an obsession for a lot of the population, at least from what we have seen in Argentina and Uruguay (not Peru). Basically to drink mate you need a fancy hollowed-out gourd, a funny looking silver straw with a flattened end that you drink from and a wide closed end with holes that goes down in the gourd, dry yerba mate that you pack down in the gourd, and a thermos full of hot water ...

Fin Del Mundo

... autumn weather taking over. PS: The journey to El Calafate was a bit ****; FYI anyone going this way has to go in and out of Chile (fussy for not allowing fruit, veg or meat); and you have the added joy of a customs and a police checkpoint on both sides, meaning plenty of passport stops, bag checks, etc. We think our coach company (or Chilean customs) got their passenger numbers mixed up, meaning 2 hours sat on the bus wondering what on earth is going on!

At the end of the world (well almost)

... in one day but then we are at the end of the
world. The views were well worth the climb!

25th March 2009 - Tierra del Fuego Nacional Parque

We needed to get some more trekking done before the big trek in Torres
del Paine next week. So today we headed off to the national park close
to Ushuaia where we took the coastal path along side the lakes and
through the forest. It was gorgeous - we could quite happily build a
hut on the beach and live there.
Shipwrecks, Stormy Seas and Scary Seals

... then, so we walked briskly, in single file between them, hoping for safety in numbers and with stones ready to bang together to scare off any brave agitants. It was another totally different landscape, again surprising me - I had imagined Antarctic as just flat and white (as, indeed, much of it is) but this was a dark rocky island with mysterious spires of rock jutting out of the sea just beyond ...

Ushuaia - Argentina

We left El Calafate and Southern Patagonia and headed for Tierra Del Fuego, actually a large island on the southern tip of the continent, some of which is in Chile, some of it Argentinian land. While Lynette and Sichy chose the quick/ easy/ expensive option to fly, we elected to take a 20 odd hour scenic bus journey. This meant we had to cross from Argentina into Chile, cross a ferry in the bus, then drive for a few hours ...

National Park and boarding Polar Pioneer

Woke to a glorious blue sky and sunshine. We went upstairs to the 4th floor for a very tasty breakfast and a great view of the bay. Finished packing, checked out, left our luggage at the hotel, then got a rental car.

Paul drove through the insane Ushuaia no-lane, no-signal-matters traffic to the National Park. It took far less than the estimated 40 minutes to reach the entrance. The road turned to dirt right after leaving the main town of Ushuaia but was a very good road nonetheless ...

It´s the end of the world as we know it . . . . .

... look and feel like the last city on Earth, we both like it, but still unsure as to why we do. It has a certain decaying charm, that some seaside towns have, but has the advantage of being surrounded by mountains on one side, and the Beagle channel on the other, and again is breathtaking for this fact. The town its self is spread out and up into the hillside, so plenty of steep roads to stroll around (You would hate it mum), there is 1 main street which the houses most ...

In Ushuaia, at last!

... si, Aeroporto. - Solo "Aeroporto"? - Si, si, "Aeroporto". We go outside, no bus, no nothing. And it was raining hard. With other miserable travelers of the same and other canceled flights we formed a nice herd that went from here to there in search of the bus. Finally we found some buses and talk to the drivers outside. - Is this the bus to hotel "Aeroporto"? - Which hotel "Aeroporto"? - Hotel "Aeroporto". - All hotels ...
