The alarm went off 6,30am & I just wanted to turn over & go back to sleep but I also wanted to go on the 5 hr jet boat at Talkeetna to Devils Gorge on the white water & it was due to leave at 9.30am so that won out!
Sheila got up as I went out to the garage &, as I was departing (in their van), I asked where the hand brake was as I couldn't find it. It turned out to be a foot pedal up from the floor on the left, once pressed it had to be released by hand ...
... a nice cup of tea here and failed. North Americans just don't get "tea". Sigh
Heading out of Anchorage about 15 miles out ... couldn't find my purse. Ahhhhhh! Had already lost (and found) my sunnies this morning. One heart attack, frantic rummage through bag, checking in boot and finally, call to hotel to discover I left it at the hotel counter when we checked out. Immense relief!! Looks like I'm going to be "that" person this trip. Still, ...
... to grab some bacon to cook with our potatoes for breakfast (I had forgotten bacon at home, one of our camping staples) and he would be right back. We forgot that we were not in the city anymore, and the store didn't even open til 1000. LOL. He figured that out when he arrived there. We camped here once a week, all summer. Sometimes only one or two days, sometimes four or five. Just depended. We would sleep late, til noon or even 2 or 3 pm, wake up, and walk the short trail down the hill ...
... course and we board into the red plane. The seats are tiny and low and the smell of Kerosin is noticeable. Mike starts the engine and we put the headset on. Off we go take off.
The plane is slow but rises rapidly. The views are magnificient and so far the sky is not too cloudy. As we come closer to Mount Mckinley winds are increasing and the flight gets bumpy.
Mike decides to show us the Ruth Glacier but we won't land today, bummer.
