The city of BagnoRegio was founded the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago. It was quite a big city and important on trade routes. The city was built on what's known as friable volcanic TUFF. A hard layer of clay then soft, quite porous tuff. The upper part of the city started crumbling centuries ago and a 16 century earthquake didn't help matters.
