    ... we found the place.

This was our second AirBnB place and it drove home the idea of never trust the pictures. The photos always make the places look much nicer and bigger than they really are. The room was a lot smaller and a bit mustier (think cellar) than we anticipated. Well, it was only for one night and we would only be here to ...

... pastry served with goji berries, currents, pomegranate and walnus; and my seabass in pistachio crust was also delcious. The next day we went back to walk around Sassi's tiny streets lined with stone houses, and a church and its crypt. The crypt was the original church and was at least as old as the 1400's and had some well preserved frescoes. In the afternoon we drove to see the 'trulli' which are stone houses with a conical roof, all painted white. Quite touristy but ...

Today the Government owns 70% of the properties. In recent times the area had been inhabited again, café, shops, boutique hotels - and is now listed as a UNESO World Heritage Site.
Absolutely delightful to wonder around - even in the rain, we spoke to a number of locals who are very excited about the rejuvenation of their town.

Our 'deluxe cabin' on the Jadrolinija ferry was comfortable, (it should be for the high price we paid) although looked a bit tired as the decor was drab, and the ticket included a very basic breakfast the next morning. The ferry left Dubrovnik at 10:00 pm and we arrived in Bari at 8:00 am. We had a coffee while we waited for the owner of the apartment to arrive, then we left our bags and went for a walk. Bari's old town, unlike those in Split and Dubrovnik, ...

We ventured further afield today to visit the town of Matera - a Unesco world heritage site which has been granted the title of European City of Culture for 2019, for which they are very proud. We had watched a TV program about the town a while ago and wanted to take the opportunity to visit while we were here. The old town is made up of 100s of "sassi" - which are cave dwellings - some not recognisable as caves per se as they have a normal frontage, but ...
