Resting Up

Well we made it to Alaska, finally. We are resting up today. Had the oil changed on the truck. Were going to have it changed in Whitehorse at Walmart, but it was Sunday and I quess the employees didn't believe in coming to work. It was 10:00 and the mechanics weren't on the job yet. They hadn't showed up for work. The girl inside told me that they opened the doors with only 5 workers present, that included the managers ...

... have a frickin' screw loose!!

After our journey through the looney bin capital of Alaska, we only had about 45 minutes at camp before we headed off to dinner at a local restaurant named "Fast Eddy's" where we ate a very large, delicious meal.

We got as far as loading the PT on the car hauler, but won't strap it down until morning because the mosquitoes are swarming voraciously.

Frost Heaves & Undulatiosn

... 8217;ve been saving our laundry since Prince George. Of course, we can do that task at Jessica & Ryan’s while we visit. They also have wireless internet so I won’t have to go sit in the food court at the BX like I did last time we stayed on base. I’m sure Nitchie will be thrilled to see Riley and her parents, but more than anything, she’ll be glad we’re staying put for awhile. Long trips are definitely not her thing.

June 14 - Whitehorse, Yukon to Tok, Alaska

... frost. It was raining so hard that we took few photos toward the end of our drive today. The R.V. park we had reservations for was muddy and flooded so we drove 70 miles further than planned. When we got into Tok, Alaska, the camper and truck were covered with mud, so we paid a visit to the wash stand at camp to hose it off.

Whitehorse to Tok - Day 7

... anything I was interested in viewing so I just curled up in my bed in the backseat and took a snooze. Each time I would make the effort to open my eyes it was the same. Gray, cloudy, cold, and gloomy. Nothing to do but sleep. Even the wild animals are hidden somewhere out of this mess. After we make the turn at Haines Junction, we soon come to Kluane Lake. It is an enormous lake tucked between two mountain ridges. The road travels right ...

Where is Chicken, Alaska

There is a town in Alaska on the Taylor Highway between Tok and Dawson City named Chicken. The story goes that the original settlers of the town wanted to name the town after the state bird, the ptarmigan, but did not know how to spell it. Since the ptarmigan resembles a chicken, sort of, they did the next best thing and named the town Chicken. The post office is Chicken has been operating since 1903 ...

Journey Into the Interior

... was shortened to Tok during WWII when fighting broke out in the Aleutians. Rain was threatening so we moved all our bags, tote boxes and cooler into the front, pumped up the air mattress in back and slept in the back of the Escape for the night. Even though it was still light, we quickly fell asleep after our long drive through the vastness of the Yukon and Alaskan Interior.

Day 63 Tok to Chicken

... have one, we were told that all we had to do was ring for road side assistance. YEAH RIGHT on the Top of the World Road!) so this was a little insurance policy just in case. Well even that turned into a fun thing, for starters we had to work out how to get the wheel trim off the wheel to test the wheel brace size. That created a challenge to find someone to explain to us how that should happen, then back ...

Day 50 Yukon - Alaska

... it also gave us more detail of the roads to allow us to make a better choice. We left and again drove along the Alaskan highway, this in itself was an experience! It was ok for a good stretch and we made good time, until we came to the roller coaster bits, We kid you not, the road had numerous sections marked with little orange flags. The road dips and has pot holes with variations that would match the rides in Disneyland. We are getting good at the ...
