Thank You For Getting Us Here Alive

... the Juneau International Airport. Our shuttle van is on its way from the Driftwood Lodge in downtown Juneau. Quoting from my pocket journal:"

the shuttle arrives. Bill sees the driver and says, "whoa...who is this old woman??" I had to shush him because it was a dude, but he was very unusual, so could have been Granny or Grampy or Cousin or Brother - hard to tell. (Hayden just informed me that he was a guy ...

Big seas, no vomit!

... Anchorage though. I got talking to David on the train, he had just finished a cycle tour on Alaska and was going home to Juneau on the ferry. At the Whittier station we met 2 other cyclist tourists who were also going to be on the boat. The four of us went to the one cafe in town for lunch and then to the one bar in town. All the locals live in one building - there is no land to build houses, it is all owned by the Railroad. After a while we headed to ...

Life in Auke Bay

... I’m filling the water tanks and just went to the harbormaster’s office to pay for our time here…thinking positive that we will be able to leave early in the morning. Our next destination is Glacier Bay, though we still haven’t been able to get a permit. We’re not sure when we will have internet again, and also are not sure where we will be going from Glacier Bay.

Juneau Alaska is zippy

... a creek. The ziplines were about 300-400 feet long with the longest being 750 feet long. The longest still only took 15 seconds to traverse. The final zipline was reached by crossing a suspension bridge but we were hooked into a safety line while crossing it. It was alot of fun and the weather co-operated again with just overcast skies and temps of 60 F. (Juneau averages about 250 days of rain a year so 2 out of 3 days - it rains!). The entire zipping experience ...

Ports of Call - Alaska cruise

... an old church and then Mendenhall Gacier. Very scenic with a waterfalls at the bottom right. On the way back our driver gave us a little family history. He had 11 brothers and sisters. His Mom was Native and was from the area while his father was from the Philippines. A large number of filipinos had immigrated to the area. His father decision to move to Juneau was more accidental. Juneau was the destination of the first ship leaving ...

Juneau, you know?

Today we landed in Juneau. We had learned from the naturalist that we had to wake up early to see the whales. So we set the alarm (which didn't go off) and did manage to get up at 7 am local time. We opened the curtains to see - clouds, light rain, and some misty fog. Not like the day before, we could see quite a bit, but most of the land was enshrouded in foggy rain. It may have been scenic, but we couldn't see it. We did see some little glimpses ...

Granite Creek trail and a couple of lazy days

... the turn off for Granite Creek Trail. We had planned on doing this and preceeded another 1.5 miles with a 1200 foot elevation gain to Granite Creek Basin. The trail was narrow and started with a lot of swtichbacks and some local Juneau trail preservers were cleaning it up (weed whacking the heck out of it). It was a hard climb and after going through valleys and snow covered areas we ...

Day 64, 65

... vegies. Then down to Skagway, the view is still postcard quality. Marian was forced into replacing her camera, because hers had "technical problems" so we left the camera shop to walk the streets and search the shops again. We found the show we wanted to experience was playing that evening (our previous information was they didn't do a show Thursday evening) because they had been booked twelve months prior for this show it, was being played this Thursday ...

Alaska or not?

... other jobs. I had an interview last weekend to do housekeeping at a small bed and breakfast. The owner is really nice and so far I'm supposed to start this Friday, working 3 days a week. Jason hasn't been lucky so far and we still hope something might be coming up for him. What we really gotta find, is a place to stay at. We can't stay here at the hotel much longer and don't even want to. We have been looking at some places but it's quite hard ...

First destination in Alaska - Juneau

... big. It fills with souvenirs, jewelry stores and restaurants. There is a gondola that can take you to the top of Mt. Roberts. The view is magnificient from up there. However, it's pretty expensive. It costs us $25/person.

For Juneau, I suggest you to go Medenhall glacier. We did not go there, and I was pretty dissapointed as some people said it's worth to visit. You can take an execursion through your ...
