May 20th – Day 16
Today we woke up, pulled the curtains
back and gazed in awe at the rocks rising above the carpark. We
hadn't seen any of it in the dark but once revealed, it was amazing.
Sedona it beautiful, I compare it to Queenstown in New Zealand, full
of quaint places to eat and the prices are expensive. But the scenery
is astonishing and I wanted to take photos ...
... where we had a "layover" of several hours before boarding Amtrak's Capitol Limited, which would take us to Washington. (See separate entry for Chicago).
On board the Capitol Limited, life resumed much as it,had on the Southwest Chief. At the cafe car we met a fellow Perthite who was travelling with his wife and we spent the evening chatting with Dave as we trundled through the Illinois countryside and into our third night ...
... with snow, but there were lots of mesas and I was expecting to see a Comanche Chief on a horse looking down from any one of them.
Neither of us has ever been to the Grand Canyon, and our trip there is set up for Wednesday.
Jerry figured out the location a few days ago. Trying to help with his packing I did "Copy Image" of the weather.com forecast and made sure it showed no mention of the location. Except, ...
... so we immediately bundled up. Tyler grilled some brats and polish sausage and we had a delicious dinner. We then packed our backpack for the Grand Canyon. It gets heavy fast! We went to sleep early so we could get up early and check out a local breakfast place before heading out. It got down to 30 degrees at night so we were thankful for our toasty mummy sleeping bags. Flagstaff was a cool little college town, it felt very comfortable and I can definitely see the appeal for anyone college bound.
