    8/24 was our first full day in Long Beach. We decided to take a ride to Oregon. The town of Astoria, OR is only 1/2 hour away. We took Route 103/101 through the towns of Seaview, Illwaco, Chinook and then crossed a 4.1 mile bridge crossing over the Columbia River into the town of Astoria. Lewis recruited William Clark to share command of the expedition, and they left from St. Louis on their epic journey up the Missouri River, across the Rockies and down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean. There were only about 48 members of the party and they were able to make only about 20 mileS/day.

    This morning we awoke to fog and a temperature of about fifty degrees. Fortunately, we carry a couple of electric space heaters, which I turned on when I arose. Before long it was “toasty” in the coach. Lisa figured that it would clear off by noon.
