    8/24 was our first full day in Long Beach. We decided to take a ride to Oregon. The town of Astoria, OR is only 1/2 hour away.     ... I went back to the hotel and read Bridget Jones in the lobby. Snorting occasionally, especially at the ****oons bit.     ... on big cargo ships. We could see the cranes loading 6-8 big logs at a time. And there were stacks of logs all along the river front--the Columbia River. We saw a billboard as we entered town congratulating the loggers union on job well done. This is a working class, union town.
