... br>Drove on to Homer. Checked in at the bear viewing office to sign our releases for tommorows adventure. Weather good now. Checked in to Lands End. Great place. 5 BR house at the end of Homer Spit. Unbelievable views of water and mountains. Went for fabulous pizza at Fat Olives.
Homer, Alaska, United States tom1100... feel to see wildlife from water level than from a tour boat, We saw 4 sea otters (one let us get quite close), at least 7 harbor seals, 3 bald eagles, and several species of sea birds. (If that last part sounds vague, I admit I'm not nearly as good at bird identification as I am with some of the mammals.) Most of the time, my ...
Homer, Alaska, United States sueonthego... We visited Kenai, a small city to see the Church. It rained on our way to Homer. Just before we arrived at Homer, at the hilltop overlooking homer spit, this place offered a spectacular view of the glaciers! There're two telescope that enabled us to see the ship on the sea and car on the spit, not to mention the ice/snow on the glacier.
The B&B was very ...
... more difficult so we decided to head back to the cabin for lunch and picture viewing. Jean Keene also fed and attracted a large number of rosy finches to her yard and they were eating their breakfast right along with the eagles. I have put a representative selection of pictures here, but will save some of the typical scenes to add throughout the week. We will have five more days at the feeding before we head back to Anchorage.
Homer, Alaska, United States eagle46... rusty has just put himself out and Duffy is standing in shock and mumbling to himself that "its not worth it, its not worth it". I run and tell the manager what happened and to call 911 (they didn't) and to call MY boss because she would need to know. while all this is going on the orders are still rolling in because god forbid you close the kitchen when the *******n thing lights on fire. I jump back on the line and start to cook Rusty's orders and ...
Homer, Alaska, United States nealinthailand... the rental car and continued my drive. It wasn't long before I took another detour into portage valley which isn't a very long drive but is filled with glaciers rolling down almost sheer cliffs. When you look up you just see this wall of blue and white looming over you and its beautiful. I would just like to point out at this point that I didn't break a leg, I didn't have a major ...
Homer, Alaska, United States nealinthailand... at about midnight and I had to start work at 2pm the next day at lands end. Not exactly a lot of time to get rest but it was not too bad considering I had slept A LOT on the plane rides and in the airports. I have to admit that it was weird climbing into a bed with an exgirlfriend that I hadn't really seen in 4 years. The fact that she insisted on sleeping in her panties added to the weirdness but not in a particularly unpleasant way. The next day Walt ...
Homer, Alaska, United States nealinthailand... as I did in my last blog but here was living proof that the area was once occupied by the Russians. To my amazement the church was open so it was time to go and explore. The interiors of Russian Orthodox Churches are decorated with paintings of religious icons and murals which are hanging everywhere. The overwhelming colour is gold. There are no pews, just standing room. There is a heavy use of candles. On the exterior the characteristic ...
Homer, Alaska, United States loboHey Gang, Ian's Mom here, Just to set the record straight, I thought I should add my 2cents or so... The flight out here was never ending. That was really the only painful part of the whole trip. That AND getting used to 21 hours of daylight. At "dusk" last night I felt genuinely tired and ready for bed. DUSK... it so happens that dusk starts at 8 and goes on for 6 hours or so. I should be screwed up for a week of sleep when I get back. As for the men ...
Homer, Alaska, United States wolfpackcruiser... there are a series of signs of four-digit numbers sporadically along the side of the road. They start off in the 1700s miles away from the entrance and keep working their way up into the 1900s. Upon entering the Visitor's Center, we learned that those were where the glacier had extended out to in that year. In addition to being a little educational, the Exit Glacier outting also gave us a chance to get a bit of exercise ...
