... Portland, Oregon in 1929. Although loved and cared for by a couple of families, Patsy Ann was not cut out to be a homebody. She became a popular dog-about-town, making the rounds of the shops and offices where she was welcomed and given treats.

Steamships of that era did not arrive like clockwork as they do today. Juneau knew a ship was coming in when Patsy Ann dropped whatever she was doing and trotted briskly to the waterfront. ...

Today we arrived about half-hour early in port so had time to check out tourist shop near dock and I am glad we did. I got a nice rain jacket on end of season sale and it really came in handy. I ended up really glad I did as it rained the whole day we were out and it was cold. The extra layer was really appreciated as I had a vest on, rain jacket and down vest at at times a poncho on to stay warm. The tour we took was the Mendenhall Glacier and Alaska Garden ...

... fed a diet high in protein and fat. The puppies were adorable, most around 12 weeks of age but a couple were only 2 weeks old. It was over before we knew it. An amazing morning! Mooched around Juneau this afternoon. Took a ride up the mountain on the tram way and went for a short hike at the top. Fantastic views. Came across a marmot who was pretty chilled at having us so close. Ate some hot ...

... start of the tourist season in May. The season finishes about the 26th September.

We were put into groups of four or 5 to a dog sled. Keith was the leader of our team of 12 huskies and there was another couple with us. We took turns at standing on the back of the sled and around the ice we went. It was unbelievable how keen the huskies were to get going. A husky dog can pull twice its body weight. We were travelling about 7 - 8 miles and hour. It was so much fun and worth ...

Jennie writes: we are now in a wildlife-rich area called the Inian Islands where many tidal waters meet and fish swim near the surface: good news for the birds. Excitement started early with people spotting porpoises from the deck pre-breakfast. Excitement quadrupled when we went out on the white water skiff ride, bouncing across the water with the skiff at a high angle. We saw a host of Steller's sea lions, some catching and eating salmon, got real ...
