Fairbanks

Fairbanks was interesting for a lot of reasons, one of which is that the first night there we went to dinner and spotted a car with an unusual flyer on the door. I went to their website and this group every other year does a rally through many countries in vintage cars. We have registered and may consider doing one of their rallys in 2014. We played at the Ice Museum - brrr!, enjoyed a touristy visit to the Alaskaland Pioneer Park that included attending a nighttime vaudeville performance tha...

Back to civilization

We stayed at 7 Gables Inn when we returned from the Dalton highway. Still long-hour driving, but getting back on paved roads felt so good. We washed the RV at the campground near Yukon river bridge. Otherwise the dirt would be all over us when we opened the cabin door. The water's very cold, chilling, even though the sun shone strong. I haven't had a bath for several days, staying on the RV. Not only the car needed a wash, but also me...

... at $375.00. The caribou are fascinating, as well.  They hang out in huge herds.  They migrate more than 3,000 miles a year and shed their racks annually.

We then visited the Museum of the North, also on the university campus.  The Alaska Gallery has artifacts, stuffed animals, geological samples, and gold nuggets, divided into the regions of the state. We spent several hours enjoying the exhibits.

... but the fields that have grown there are full of every color of flower. The blackened trees are sad to look at, but it is a part of the cycle of renewal here, plus there were tons of baby trees growing :)

After crossing the Tanana River, you head back into the curvy mountain roads, where on the outer curves there are breath-taking views of the valley below, with a wide river winding around huge pine trees. Almost no civilization and the moutains are almost gone into ...

Men's Europe Packing List

... Hubby will also be toting along the 3 Skype phone. Not yet available in the US, I am going to be given one when we land in Europe to review. Hopefully my review will help future world travelers who are thinking about traveling abroad and renting or buying a Skype phone. I'm certainly looking forward to putting it through its paces. It will have tough competition, stacked up against my Nokia N95 with its 5 mega pixel ...

The Italian Job - AKA Me Vs. Trenitalia.com

All the guidebooks and all of my friends who had been to Europe told me, just buy Italian train tickets once you get to Europe...unless you have specific trains and days you want to travel, then you should book in advance. We have a pretty tight schedule, 2 days in Venice, 2 days in Rome, 4 days in Paris and then 4 days in London before the conference and 3 days of the conference. I have hotels pre-booked at each location and it would throw ...

More Fairbanks

... for thought the rental guy said "Well, there's the military base that you will paddle though". This did not bode well and unfortunately he was spot on. As military bases go I'm sure that the one in Fairbanks is very scenic but from the river there was bugger all to see. Also, it seems that the way to dispose of old cars in Alaska is to crush them and then stick them in the river bank - no wonder wildlife seemed scarce. After a 5 hour paddle/drift and numerous games of "I'm thinking of ...

... spectacular in the majesty of the mountains around it and the precariousness of the gravel road leading to Polychrome Pass and beyond. Our bus driver, who by this time had the whole "shtick" down pretty well, was quite animated and informative concerning the mountains and wild life. The trip started with "my two eyes are for watching the road", yours are for finding the wild life". Considering the narrow and precarious road that was good advice. In realty she ...

... 8217;s appreciative, but I’m still feeling this racial facial tension, so leave after one beer. There are too many choices here, and if the natives seem cautious at best, the immigrants- as if anyone were anything other than an immigrant- are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met in my life.

I go check out another bar, totally different from the first two. They’ve even got ...

Making the best of two days in Fairbanks

As I mentioned earlier my truck cap or "canopy" as it's called here, has issues with the latch, namely it won't open. I'm forced to stay an extra day here so that they can have someone look at it on Monday. If they can't fix it the nearest Snugtop dealer is in Edmondton, Alberta... so that's trouble. If I can't get into the back of the truck, I can't sleep there or get at the camp stove and all that stuff. It's ...
