In my opinion there are two reasons to ride the cable car - (1) simply to get to the botanical gardens or the Carter Observatory without having to drive from downtown to the point(s) of interest or (2) a person just wants to ride in a piece of history. I was the latter. The cost was $15 NZ for a family of 5. It would have been cheaper to drive to our ultimate destination, but again, it was the historical aspect which drew us to the cable car. The ride was a relatively short 5 minutes, but for those of you who like things from the past, this is a fun little trip. If the historical aspect is not your forte, and you are just trying to get to the observatory or gardens, just drive yourself. Also, it is important that you observe the operating times for that day. We stayed later at the observatory and because the last trip on the cable car back to the downtown station was at 10:00 pm, one of our group had to leave to fetch the car.
