We had a small, personalized tour (7 people) with guide Pete that was simply magical! Pete was extremely knowledgable about the history, countryside, and local wildlife, not to mention all aspects of the two caves that we toured. Seeing the glowworms up close - everything from the worms themselves, to the adult flies, spit strands and watching them reel up a catch was incredible. We enjoyed hot chocolate while sitting in the cave and watching the twinkling lights as well as the boat ride and studying moa bones. Meeting the local eel outside the cave entrance was incredible as well! I'd definitely recommend this tour!

Waitomo to Taupo (02/09)
We had hoped to get to Waitomo Caves for either the 9am or 9.30am tours, but the bed proved too comfy so we only got there in time to make the 10am tour. We booked onto the glow worm cave tour and the Ruakuri Limestone cave tour.
The glow worms were fascinating, it was like looking up at the nights sky, …
Heel interessant bezoek maar de eerlijkheid gebiedt me te zeggen dat het een beetje overroepen is. very interesting place, for sure something unique, but we all had the impression that the boatride was stretched a bit …
Drive to Waitomo to see the glow worm caves. Took a trip to a remote destination and amazing sight of thousands of glow worms on the roof of a cave looking like a very starry night. Another cave with stalactites, stalagmites and sink holes.Dinner at the Huhu cafe …
Bear Grylls eat your heart out. Last week we trekked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, cited as the best one-day tramp in the country due to it's spectacular and varied volcanic terrain. The 16km hike had us climbing over lava flows, crossing a crater floor, skirting active geothermal areas, and passing beautiful and serene emerald and blue lakes; …
Customs processing in New Zealand is a breeze. As long as you don't have any fruit with you. I quickly had to eat my apple because it is a big no-no to bring any fruits into New Zealand. They even have a fruit sniffing dog that sniffed my bag since it recently contained an apple and it had to get checked out. This however was quicker than when I …
Visited the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand.
Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent
light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves'
historical and geological significance.
Hey guys! I am back for another update. Life is good in Auckland, its a bit cold out today, but for “winter” its not so bad. Jeans and jumper kind of a day with a slight chance of avoiding the rain.
I have been working a lot, catching up with friends, and the odd trip here and there. The other weekend we went down to …
The title is a nod to a Jimmy Buffett song (go figure) and describes the best part of this day. Pete picked us up and we drove through the beautiful New Zealand countryside. If green is your favorite color, this is the place. The gently rolling hills, fields full of cows and sheep divided by hedgerows, and newly plowed spring fields of potatoes …
