Located near the town of Fussen, Hohenschwangau Castle is a short bus ride from the Fussen train station, and the older of the 2 castles in the area. And while not as famous as its cousin, Neuschwanstein Castle, this one is not a waste of time either. More about the history of the castle in the blog.
The castle can only be seen on a guided tour, at an appointed time, which you will get at the ticket office. There are limited number of people per tour time. The guided tour is done by an audioguide, which has to be activated each time you enter a different room, by a guide. You will only have a limited time in each one. So the tour will feel rushed. And oh, one other thing, photography is not allowed at all, while inside.
You should definitely get your tickets as soon as you can, at the ticket office, where you can buy for tour times for the 2 castles. You will be given a tour time, which you should NOT miss, and be there at the entrance. If you are late, then forget it, because they will not allow any latecomers. So get to the entrance ahead of time. There is a gift shop to hang around in, while waiting.
After the tour, you can check out for views of the surrounding countryside, which is nice. But being at a lower level, the views are not as nice as from Neuschwanstein Castle. More about that castle in a separate review.
If having to choose between the 2 castles, this one is the much easier to get to, and closer to the main ticket office. And not nearly as strenuous to get to. So if short on time and/or having any health issues, especially during the busy season, this castle is definitely worth visiting.
