Getting to the Piazzale seems like a difficult task when you first start out- it's uphill from the moment you pass through the old walls.
But the view is infinitely worth it. All of Florence stretches out in front of you, from the Pallazio Pitti on your left to the hills on your right. If so inclined, you can easily play a game of point-out-the-landmark as well.
The bronze replica of Michelangelo's David, Dawn and Dusk, and Night and Day is also interesting to look at- it has character, being outside and you're actually allowed to photograph it!
It's definitely worth a go if you have some time and don't mind the walk.
