I had been to Palenque before and the return trip was no less satisfying. In a jungle setting, it was quite humid but the splendour of the site made up for the elements. It is not the largest Mayan site but the quality of what is found in a couple of small areas is superb. All in a row are the temple of the Masks, the temple of the Red Queen [in poor condition], the temple where the great ruler Pakal was buried and the temple of the Inscriptions. Nearby is the Palace with several original stucco carvings in good shape. The temple of the cross area is worthy of time in and of itself but it also affords great views of the Palace. The museum was closed today [a Monday]. There are numerous vendors on site re leather place mats, jewelry, painted feathers and every other type of conceivable knick knack. Prices were reasonable. Palenque is a gem.
