Myeongdong offers the perfect opportunity to observe the live-action play of supply and demand. A sprawling mass of retail shops 5 square blocks wide and at least as many stories high, this is no ordinary shopping district.
The purely pedestrian streets are congested with traffic, with frequent red lights in the form of street vendors, food carts and fortune-tellers littered all over the streets. Offering far more interest and intrigue than their box-brand neighbors, street vendors are what lend Myeongdong its air of charm. Their treasures, chaotically displayed amidst the backdrop of the pedestrian parade, with its musical punctuation and excited chatter, seem infinitely more appealing than the carefully crafted window displays.
