I visited Montserrat back in 2007 while on a daytrip from the resort of Tossa de Mar. You cannot beat the setting - the mountain of Montserrat is captivating, and I wish I'd had more time to explore it. My time there was limited, so I only browsed the shops, opting to buy souvenirs at a little shop frequented by the monks rather than the more touristy shops closer to the bus drop-off point. The only downside of the trip was that our tour guide left us in the queue to see the Black Madonna. The queue was very long, and positioned in a corridor. Due to how busy Montserrat was with pilgrims, we found it impossible to leave the queue and had to 'go with the flow'. I was a little uncomfortable with this as I felt it was insincere of me to visit the Black Madonna as I'm not religious, and it also took up over half of my time there.
In saying that, it was a minor hiccup, and I would love to go back and explore the place more thoroughly. All the staff we met on-site were polite and friendly, and I was lucky enough to hear the Boys' Choir.
Well worth a visit no matter your religious beliefs.
