We arrived too early and had to kill some time waiting for the first tour at 9:30. The tour guide gave us a great overview of the history and architecture. We then spent the balance of our time exploring on our own.
One of the must see architectural, historical and religious attractions is the Mission San Xavier del Bac. The timeline for this historic Spanish Catholic mission began in 1692 when a Jesuit priest walked the area. Today's Mission was built between 1783-1797 and is the oldest European structure in Arizona. The mission is a pilgrimage site where Pilgrims come to pray and pin "Milagros" on the cloth covering the reclining figure of St. Francis Xavier. Milagros are religious folk charms traditionally used for healing purposes and as votive offerings. Have a problem with your feet, leave a Milagros in the shape of a foot!
