When you go to the Long Bar, you know what to expect. You're going to order the Singapore Sling; your bartender will be charming and highly talented; the interior will be regal and opulent; depending on when you go, the bar may be packed to the gills.
I went at the end of a slow day, so I had the added benefit of no crowds. I asked for "the single-most popular drink," and the bartender politely laughed. I'm sure he's heard all the jokes by now. I enjoyed my drink and tried to absorb the essences of the famous writers for which, in part, this bar is so renowned. I allowed myself to momentarily relax in a stratum of elegance that was normally far, far beyond my means.
