Kanheri or Krishnagiri is an ancient Buddhist cave site [2BC - 11AD] situated within the dense forests of Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivili East.
The more than 100 caves are cut into a rocky plateau. Most are austere monastic cells from the Hinayana influence, with a few displaying exquisite carvings from the Mahayana stream. Guides can be engaged near the ticket counter from moonlighting ASI staff, for Rs.100 to 200, strictly negotiable.
These are definitely worth at least a few hours visit, preferably in the morning to beat Mumbai's infamous heat! In the monsoons the pathways become treacherously slippery so good grip footwear is an absolute must. That said, monsoons at the caves are magical with a rain fed stream and waterfalls in abundance at the site.
Entrance from the SGNP main gate at the Western Express Highway in Borivali East. Buy a ticket for the National Park, make your way 5km in to the Kanheri Caves and buy another ticket for the caves.
