China is such a wonderful country with rich history that goes back thousand and thousand of years ago. I have always wanted to see The Great Wall my self. I didnt even know that the wall is not a continous structure until I got here in China. I must be thankful to www.greatwallforum.com for all the insights of the other travelers. I have learned a lot about the wall and I promise that I will be back to visit the other sections of the wall.
Since there are several sections of the Great Wall, I have decided to visit the one in Miyun County, Beijing ( Gubeikou and Jinshanling). Miyun County is up north of Beijing city about 3-4 hours drive from Beijing. We took the bus from Dongzhimen Bus Station , rode the 916 Bus (bound for Miyun) and we got off at Miyun Bus Station. Before I came to Beijing, I already contacted Snow, whom I met through the great wall website and owns a nice guesthouse near the Jinshanling Great Wall. He was very helpful and we booked a room in his guesthouse and paid 100 RMB/night. He also picked us up at the Miyun bus station and drove to his place for about 1-hours and paid 280 RMB. I think it was reasonable given the long distance that he had to drive. If there are more of you, the price could get much lower. He drives his own car and I think it's a new one.
The morning, we headed out very early and drove to Gubeikou Great Wall. It was freezing but my determination was stronger than the discomfort that I felt at that time. Since we were there early, the ticket office wasn't open yet so we got away with it. We had to hire him to guide us because some parts of Gubeikou Great has military restrictions and we had to detour on some ways. Im very glad that Snow was very knowlegeable on the best photo scenes as we hike.
Unlike the popular and more easy to reach Badaling Great Wall which is often flooded by many tourists, these sections of the wall was actually the exact opposite. We only met less than 10 people in the 4-hour hike from Gubeikou to Jinshanling. Most of the times, we had the wall all to our selves. It was a very surreal! I particularly like the Gubeikou Section for its unrestored feature. It was a dream come true for me and until know I find it hard to believe that I actually have walked on the wall which I was just looking at the pictures many years ago. Apart from the Great Wall, you will be enchanted by the sceneries sorrounding the wall. It was a very memorable experience and I hope you enjoy looking at the pics I took.
After we hiked the wall, we decided to go to Nanshan Ski Resort in Miyun. From the entrance of the Jinshanling Great Wall it took us another an hour and a half to get to the ski resort. We had Snow to drive us to the Ski resort. That day was full of fun and good memories.
