A very emotional day
Wow, what a day of mixed emotions - from the exhilaration of our first Shinkansen ride to the sombre mood brought on by a visit to Hiroshima Peace Park and the near terror of a long ride in a ropeway carriage out on Miyajima. What a day.

Headed south
Of course the weather improved as it was time to leave Kyoto. Shinkansen to Osaka. Another one to Hiroshima. Again, a distance of 190 miles in one and a half hours. Beautiful weather. Beautiful city. We realized what was different - the previous places were very industrial - Hiroshima is more cosmopolitan. It has a very European feel.

Hiroshima
I went to Hiroshima for a weekend. Basically saw the entire city within the span of 2 days. We took a 3 hour train ride from Sasebo to Hiroshima. We utilized the bullet train (Shinkensen) which was very interesting -- just like a flight, really -- and visited so many shrines and things, it's hard to describe. Shinkansen to Hiroshima
Long sleep in and then went on to catch the 10am Shinkansen to Hiroshima.
It only takes 90 minutes from Osaka - so we rolled in around 1pm.

Hiroshima and Miyajima
Hiroshima is probably my favorite city in Japan, and maybe in the world as well.
The people here have been through so much, but instead of becoming bitter, depressed or distant, the exact opposite happened. This is now the city of peace and love. Everyone is so nice and friendly! I've never met people like this anywhere else in the world.
