    Beautiful! A nice hike (lots of ups and downs), a nice remote section of the wall that wasn't overly busy! The cable car up and down is a good way to maximize your time on the wall.

    Of course the Great Wall is spectacular but this entrance lets you take a gondola up and they have a slide down! It also goes to the edge of the wall so you can see what the old and new parts of the wall look like!

    This visit is worth the 60 American to buy a tour. Otherwise the walk and the line to get in looks exhausting. Campy stalls of locals selling 5¥ tee shirts and a very resorted section make it enjoyable yet challenging to climb. We visited early fall and had a clear day this time. Well with the second visit to have a clear day

    Mutianya sure is a touristy place (not as much as Badaling though) but if you hike for a few Kilometres or even pass on to the unrefurbished section you can enjoy some moments on your own here. it´s easily accessable and offers good opportunities to spend the night there with your sleeping bag

    We got to this place via taxi (his name is Mr Jack). The spot was nearly two hours from our hotel (inner Mongolia). At the time of going (early June 2012) there were hardly any people there so aboslutely not crowded and the views up on the wall were fantastic. You have two ways of going up there. 1 is a cabin and another 1 is like a ski seat. we went for the second option. the reason for that is once up on the wall you can go back using a massive tobogan which we thought would be good fun to try. having said that you can go back by tobogan if you take the telecabin but you'd have a fair amount of walking to do on that wall (long and lots of ups and downs along the way) so with one baby and a toddler we gave it a miss. the price per ticket was 180 yuans (roughly £18) per adult (children were free). So all in all, a great climb, a fantastic walk and a thrilling chute!

    We went to the wall at Badaling last week. I thought there was a cable car there, but our guide said it was in a different area. My partner had no trouble climing the wall, but I only got 1/2 way before giving up. I was so disappointed with myself.
    This week we were staying at Miyun which is much closer to Mutianyu, so we hired a young man and car and paid him 300 yuen to take us to Mutianyu. I was under 1 hour driving and when we got there we saw cable car, chair lift, to go up and down, and even a toboggan ride to come down.
    So I got to see the top of the Great Wall which made me very happy.
    We were also told that Badaling was very crowded and pushy vendors. That didn't happen, but Mutianyu has lots more pushy vendors that you have to walk past.

  • A place all by yourself

    i went to Mutianyu Great Wall in Huairou all by myself. For those who plan to leave the hotel at 8am, please leave earlier. The rush hour in the subway is madness! But totally a good experience!

    Dongzhimen bus station was easy to locate with the helpful directions. Quite a walk before you get there. Make sure you ask the bus conductor and not consult a common man waiting for the same bus. He might be from a tour company who tells you to wait for another same bus in 3 minutes. LOL.

    the conductor told me where i should stop and it turned out he was a driver as well. So it was pure luck i got to The Wall without having to wait for people to share with and haggle the prices.

    Bus 916 Express: RMB 11 one way
    car hire: RMB 40 one way
    great wall admission: RMB 25 for student
    Chairlift (up) and Toboggan (down): RMB 80

    Left hotel at Tiananmen East: 8.15 am
    Reached Great Wall: 11am
    Hiking time: 2.5 hours
    Reached Dongzhimen: 4.20pm

    The wall was empty when i got there at 11 am. There were other visitors, of course, but u can take photos with no one in your shot. the vendors were not persistent as i have imagined. people were friendly and of course, they dont speak english.

    Convenient to Beijing, this is a wonderful restored section of the Great Wall. Organized tours don't really give you enough time to explore (must fit in your required shopping time at the government sponsored stores you know!) The smog was bad in mid-July but partially lifted in the early afternoon. One nice unexpected detail was the multitude of dragonflies swarming around the wall.
