Badaling seems to get a bad reputation for being overcrowded and too touristy. Although I'm sure there are less touristy places, being around other tourists does not take away from that fact that you're at one of the 7 wonders of the world.
We went on a weekday and I'm sure it does get a bit manic during the weekend - so, don't go during the weekend! Otherwise most of the crowed congeal at the top of the wall where the gondola drops them off. Take the time to walk up there so you can enjoy different views of it and to escape the lazy crowd. We found that the people along the way were really friendly and there was such a great vibe, lots of laughter and fun.
If you have more time, are fit and sure footed, you can go down the steeper part of the wall. There are virtually no people here and it's spectacular.
If you are short on time, or want an easy day trip to The Wall, go to Badaling. I'm sure it's just as amazing as anywhere else.
