The old Cathedral is almost more impressive than the New, having been constructed in the mid 1500s. The walls were originally all painted with frescoes. Unfortunately, in the 1940s, having deteriorated fir 4 centuries, they were all painted over with monochromatic industrial paints. Recently, since the Cathedral has become a museum, some of the frescoes have been uncovered and partially restored.
Besides the Cathedral itself, the many small chapels off the main hall house exhibits of the history of the cathedral and Cuenca.
