Make sure you read up on the history or it will just be another monument, like when I was here in the eighties. This time our guide gave explanation and meaning, of what the lion symbolises. In short, it symbolises the courageous swiss mercenaries who fought and died for their king at the Tuileries in 1792. The area was clean and noticed some people throwing a coin in the pond that is in front of the monument. not sure the purpose, maybe similar to the trevi fountain in Rome.
