This church is one of the landmarks of Saint Peterburg. The architecture is outstanding and the exterior is really colorful, especially the spiral domes. Once you enter the church, you'll be even more impressed, as the whole interior is covered colorful mosaic icons. The mosaic icons were completed in the modernist and Byzantine style by talented Russian painters. You really get a sense of the hard work and effort these painters and architects have put into completing this church. Alexander told us the history of the church and some stories of the painters. The name of the church "The Church of Savior on the Spilled Blood" comes from the fact that it was the spot where Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. They built his shrine on the exact spot of the assassination. The church is now a museum and no services are held there. It was good that we had a guide who told us the history and interesting stories of the church and the painters, as the church has a fascinating history.
