Salty goodness
kahjorth 0 contribution Canada Apr 29, 2013
Really cool cathedral built into an old salt mine. The lighting effects really made a cool visual experience. Different presentations for each station of the cross, ending with the worlds largest underground cross. About an hour each way from the hostel.

Very impressive apart from the religious bits
hansieryder 6 contributions United Kingdom Mar 20, 2013
The original cathedral was closed as it was unsafe, so the miners converted the disused bits of their salt mine into this new cathedral. Our guide was very knowledgeable and it was a good use of the obsolete space. Of course, choosing a group such as religious people and curious tourists to target for this was genius, as there will always be traffic!

Las minas de sal (the salt mines)
thejeshirecat 5 contributions Brisbane, Australia Oct 16, 2011
This is really cool to visit. The original cathedral was much smaller but collapsed in the 90s. They decided to make a bigger one and the effect is brilliant: black caves lit up by neon. The effect is ethereal.
I dare you to lick the walls. This review is the subjective opinion of a TravelPod member and not of TravelPod.com.

Holy salt!
rodrigofdez 1 contribution Punta Arenas, Chile Apr 11, 2011
Even though our guide was a bit in a rush, the place is unique and really worth the travel from Bogotá.
I've heard the hole trip through the high way is beautiful, unfortunately it was raining like mad and I didn't get to see anything beyond the fences that separate the fields from the way. This review is the subjective opinion of a TravelPod member and not of TravelPod.com.

A return to Bogota
19 photosAfter getting off the bus we tried to head back to our old hostel again. However, on a Sunday the bus times are very different to the rest of the week and so after a bit of deduction we managed to figure out the time table and get on the right bus. It was the slowest bus in the city though and had to stop at every station on the way back. We were …

Catedral de Sal in Zipaquirá

Busy day topped off with Ajaico
14 photosI had the rest of my healthy salad for breakfast, then headed off on the Transmilenio to Portal Norte, where I got another bus to Zipaquira. The Transmilenio is really efficient and easy to navigate. I found the salt cathedral with 2 Americans I met on this bus. It is the disused part of an old salt mine, converted into the new cathedral when the …

Jumping in
Got to My hostel late Monday night, around 11 and my card didn't work, the people who picked me up didn't speak any english and the ride was kind of nerve wracking. Felt a little overwhelmed but much better the next morning. Turns out you have to put in the last 4 digits of the card before your pin... People have been really friendly, took a bike …

Bogota Rocks
33 photosBogota is probably the last huge South American city we will visit on our trip. We expected Bogota to be another metropolis with slums, crime and pollution. It turned out to be completely different, Bogota rocks!
To give you an image of how BIG Bogota is, the city has over 8 million people! Imagine, the city of New York and Mexico city … -

With a pinch of salt
21 photosOk, so technically I have been living in Bogota since October. However the real "holidays" (or at least getting to know Bogota) started when I arrived in Bogota with my family from our two week trip to Spain.
Here are some memorable parts:
Arrival
Eight years ago, we were recieved at El Dorado airport with the family dressed … -

A highlight of the trip: The Salt Cathedral
14 photosOne of our best days so far was a day trip to the small village of Zipaquira outside of Bogota. It took several incredibly crowded bus rides and 1.5 hours to get there but it was well worth it.
The cathedral is built 100 meters into the side of a mountain and carved out of rock salt. We didn't want to wait an hour for the English tour so …
