I am visiting New Zealand from the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, the night sky is, as I learned while at the observatory, quite different. Carter was one of the smallest observatories/planetariums I have visited, but I have to say it was probably the best. The bits and pieces on display were neat, but the digital rendering of the night sky with a knowledgeable guide was nothing short of amazing. I am an avid photographer and love photographing the night sky. The presentation was both informative for that purpose with the added benefit of being entertaining. For a family of 5, the cost was around $60 NZ. The observatory is opened later than the usual 5:00 pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays for the purpose of allowing patrons to observe the sky through the telescope. If astronomy or simply the beauty of the night sky interests anyone at all, a visit to Carter Observatory is a must while visiting Wellington, North Island, New Zealand.
