It was a balmy 26degree summer evening. We brought our picnic rug, our lobster rolls and a couple of bottles of juice. The people came quietly and found a spot and settled themselves as the sun went down and sponsors handed out free water and popcorn. Soon the place was brimming with people, chit chatter and friends as Sally Field hit the screen. Amidst the crowd as the sun went behind buildings and the lights went out, I couldn't help feeling very Shirley McLainesque; here I was in the middle of New York watching a film in the park. I felt very rich indeed for our free night had only cost the price if our gourmet rolls but my picnic blanket took me to another place, embracing and old film like an old friend, in Bryant park, on a perfect summer evening, people watching, film watching and feeling like I could have been the star in my very own.
